Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and only 19 years old, University of Southern California (USC) student Judea Skies Watkins is a one-of-a-kind player and a basketball star you don’t see every day. The world knows her as “Juju” Watkins, and she became a rising star during her high school years at the infamous Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, a hotspot for the children of celebrities and athletes alike.

After transferring from Windward High, Watkins made an immediate impact on her new team, leading them to an Open Division state title with a 30–2 record while averaging 25 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. One of her most memorable high school moments? Dropping a ridiculous 60 points in a blowout win against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, finishing with an 88-39 score. Her dominance in high school opened countless doors as she transitioned to the next level– college basketball.

Her journey was documented in her show, “On the Rise: Juju Watkins” on Peacock and YouTube, where she faced a decision that every top high school athlete dreads—choosing a college. She was torn between two powerhouse institutions, USC and the University of South Carolina, both known for their elite basketball programs and deep NCAA tournament runs. Ultimately, she stayed true to her roots and chose her hometown, the “City of Angels”, representing where she came from and continuing her basketball journey at USC.

Watkins didn’t just find a team at USC; she found a family. More importantly, she found a place to elevate her game. Already a powerful offensive force, she has quickly evolved into a defensive guard, using her length and athleticism to block shots left and right. Her shot-blocking skills have even earned her a new internet-approved alter ego: “Juju Swatkins.”

With her all-around game, record-breaking performances and infectious energy, Watkins is proving to be the next big thing in basketball on both ends of the court. Many critics and fans alike have had mixed reactions towards Watkins, either marveling at her domination or speculating if she can be part of the conversation as one of the best collegiate players. But Watkins doesn’t give them the time of day, but rather she leaves it all on the court, putting record-breaking points to prove her point. With standout performances, including a near triple-double against UCLA and a career-high in blocks, Watkins has cemented herself as a top contender for national accolades.

Beyond just statistics, Watkins is rewriting history. She has already surpassed Caitlin Clark’s record for the most points in two college seasons, and at her current pace, she has a real chance to challenge Clark’s all-time scoring record by her senior year. At only 19, she has already made an unforgettable impact on USC basketball, and the future is nothing short of legendary for Juju Watkins.
