Meet the Staff

  • Rio Funatsu

    Online Co-Editor-in-Chief

    Rio is a senior in her second year of journalism. She has been writing stories ever since she could hold a pencil, her everlasting train of ideas driving the ink. She balances her desk-time with basketball which she has been involved in since middle school. She is always writing articles in cafes, allowing the weekend coffee chatter to be her background music.

  • Maya Aning

    Online Co-Editor-in-Chief

    Maya is a senior in her 4th year with the Crown and Shield, and is one of the co-Editors-in-Chief for the online paper. When not working on her articles, she plays volleyball, likes to go out and see new movies, and loves to catch some sun on the lake. She loves music, and cannot write an article without her earbuds in. She is super excited to see what this final year has in store!

  • Ayra Govil

    Online Assistant Editor-in-Chief

    Ayra Govil is a sophomore in her first year with ND Journalism. She has always been enamored with writing since she was a little girl and loves crafting stories, whether in poetry form or short stories. In her free time she plays volleyball and always finds herself picking up a book. She is thrilled to be a part of the journalism community and cannot wait to learn new things.

    Alina is interested in international affairs and global issues. Her hobbies are volleyball and thrifting. Alina's excited for writing about topics relating to global matters in journalism.

  • Amabelle Nguyen

    Staff Writer

    Amabelle Nguyen is a senior who's been writing for The Crown & Shield for three years. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the print newspaper. From pop culture recaps to opinion essays to social justice spotlights, she loves researching and covering just about anything. All she needs is an iced vanilla latte to sip on! When she's not writing articles, she loves baking sweet treats, watching movies, and walking around her neighborhood while listening to podcasts.

    Chloé Guerrand is a junior in her second year writing for Crown and Shield. She is the assistant editor-in-chief for the print newspaper and has been writing for as long as she can remember. Though writing is her main passion, she also loves listening to and learning about music, attending local shows, and reading.

    Colleen Tran is a junior in her first year with ND Journalism, and is the section editor. She occasionally enjoys watching movies and TV shows that motivate her to draw out inspiration about what she wants to write. She likes singing and listening to music that captures her attention ever since she was young. What drives her passion to write articles this year is due to her excitement in writing about different kind of topics, and also appreciating taking lots of photos.

    Dylan Crooks is a senior at Notre Dame in her first year of Journalism. She enjoys art, telling stories and playing volleyball. She is eager to explore journalistic writing.

    Karley Steele is a sophomore and it's her first year in journalism! She's always loved to express herself creatively and share her ideas and is so excited to be working for the newspaper this year. Outside of her passion for writing, she also loves theatre, drawing, and listening to music.

    Kateleen is currently a senior, who has been a member of Notre Dame's Journalism program for three years now. Her roles include being the Layout Editor of the Crown and Shield newspaper, as well as Publicity Manager. Writing has always been a passion of hers, especially being able to shed light on topics that should be known. She loves to spend time with her family and friends, who always make her laugh the hardest. She is a huge music lover, with some of her favorites ranging from SZA, all the way to the classics, such as Whitney Houston.

    Kayleigh Reid is a senior in her fourth year with ND Journalism, and the print newspaper's Editor-In-Chief. She enjoys reading, running, and going on hikes in the mountains. She plans on majoring in journalism in college and excited to write more articles for everyone. Her favorite things are matcha, true crime, and going for a nice run in the evening.

    Khloe Nguyen is a sophomore in high school, but it's her first year with the Journalism class. Outside of school, she’s been playing instruments ever since she was younger, and finds a sense of calmness and happiness playing the guitar and piano. When she has free time, she loves to read new mystery novels in the comfort of her own bed, but particularly, she is excited to grow her creative expression through writing articles for the class.

    Luna is a senior in her second year with Journalism at ND, and she’s also the graphic manager for the school year. She enjoys creative writing and English classes, as well as participating in Folklorico both inside and outside of ND. She’s excited to help inspire the creativity of others, whether it’s with their graphics or with their writing, she wants to make this year’s newspapers fun and interesting for everyone!

    Mimi Doyle is a junior at Notre Dame experiencing her first year in Journalism. She always has her head in a book, and aspires to capture audiences in her writing just as she was once captured by other authors. After school, she sings in choir, participates in Model UN, and plays piano and guitar.

    Molly Kaplan is a junior in her second year of Journalism at ND. She is the assistant layout editor and the assistant editor-in-chief for print. She plays on the Varsity Volleyball Team and Swims for the Varsity Swim team at Notre Dame and she is very excited to continue writing for the school paper this year!

    Olivia Tumacder is a junior in her first year with ND Journalism. She has been an avid reader ever since middle school and likes to visit different book stores in the Bay Area. She enjoys going on long walks with her friends and family and getting iced teas after. She is so excited to be a section editor in Journalism and is ready for a great year!
