On Dec. 21, Texas A&M University won their first national volleyball championship in their program's history. With a 3-0 sweep against the University of Kentucky in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 women’s volleyball championship, the Aggies put their program on the center stage.
Texas A&M had to climb a mountain of grit, strength, and perseverance to get to the championship. They entered the tournament at the number 3 seed (rank of a team in the tournament), facing off against the best teams in the country. One pivotal moment for the Aggies was when they battled the number 1 overall seed, the University of Nebraska. Nebraska was having a perfect season and many viewers set their expectations on the Huskers winning it all, until they went against Texas A&M. In a thrilling five set match, the Aggies came out on top, sending them to their program’s first Final Four appearance in history and being the team that put an end to Nebraska’s undefeated season.
This win only added fuel to the fire for Texas A&M as they took down another number 1 seed, the University of Pittsburgh, in the national semifinals. They kept going and finished their story by taking Kentucky in the championship for the national title. The Aggies’ biggest weapon as a team was their consistency, as they had a clear game plan, steady defense, and a belief that they belonged on the court along with every other team in the national tournament.
Although Kentucky fell short in the championship match, they played hard all season long. The Wildcats gained momentum from wins over big teams like the University of California, Los Angeles, the California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, and a five set semifinal match against the University of Wisconsin. They kept pushing, but Texas A&M was the team that came out on top.
The Aggies’ strength lay in their team connection on the court. From the first to the last points of the game, the athletes played with their all, leaving it all on the court and pushing their teammates to their absolute best. On the court, Kyndal Stowers stood out as the player the Aggies could rely on which earned her Most Outstanding Player, being a leading factor to their win.
Texas A&M’s championship is more than just a title. It is a message to every underdog in sports, no matter the age or skill level, that if you play fearlessly and stand together with your team, a championship doesn’t just have to be a dream. It can be in your sight.
