Why Prioritizing Your Mental Health is Important

Between school, homework, extracurricular activities and trying to keep up with friends, life can get overwhelming pretty quickly. Sometimes it feels like there is always something to do, and taking a break can feel like falling behind. However, one thing people often forget to make time for is their mental health; taking care of yourself is just as important as keeping up with your responsibilities.

Mental health affects how we think, feel and how we handle our daily lives. Anytime we are anxious, stressed, or mentally exhausted, even the tasks we do every day can seem hard. This affects our grades, relationships, our motivation and our overall happiness. Ignoring these feelings does not make them go away. On the contrary, constantly pushing yourself without a break can make things feel even more overwhelming.

One of the biggest reasons to prioritize mental health is that it helps prevent burnout. Burnout can happen when students feel pressure to earn good grades all the time, participate in extracurricular activities and/or maintain a social life. Having goals is important, but trying to be perfect in every aspect of life is exhausting. Giving yourself time to relax, sleep and enjoy activities in school or hobbies outside of school that you love can help you feel more centered and prepare you to handle your responsibilities.

Another important part of mental health is learning to ask for help. Talking to a person you trust, such as a family member, teacher or even a school counselor can make a big difference when things get complicated in life. Don't wait until something is unbearable to ask for help and talk about what is bothering you. Sometimes, simply having someone there to listen while you take life one step at a time is what makes a difference. Talking to someone you trust can help you open up about your emotions, and they can help you along your journey.

Prioritizing your mental health also means understanding that taking a break and being lazy are not the same thing. It is okay to do things you enjoy, such as spending an evening watching your favorite show, listening to music, going for a walk, or just putting your work away for a while. Small habits like making time to put yourself first can help with stress. You do not have to have the entire routine of your life revolve around your responsibilities; you should be able to focus on what you want to do.

Ultimately, mental health is not something we should only think about when we are struggling; It is something that deserves attention all of the time. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, school, responsibilities and relationships. Learning what your limits are and giving yourself time to recharge can make all the difference in how we go about everyday life. You do not have to do everything at once; you do not have to be amazing all the time. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is take a moment to recharge.
