How to Expand Your Music Taste

With all the new music coming out this year, many people are realizing that they don’t want their music taste to be confined to just one genre. However, expanding your musical horizons and finding new music to listen to can be difficult and you might not know where to start.

If you use Spotify as your music streaming app, you have access to many features that can help you find new music. Spotify includes several daily mixes that are organized by genre, as well as a playlist called “Discover Weekly” with new music you might like. Another way to find new artists is to look for artists similar to ones you already listen to. Spotify has a feature where you can go to artist radios, which include songs from similar artists. You can also go to the “Fans also like” page on your favorite artists’ homepages on Spotify to find similar artists.

There are also many websites that are made specifically to help people find new music to listen to. One example is the website Spotalike, which creates playlists with similar songs to ones you like. On the website Boil the Frog, you can input two of your favorite artists, and the website names several other artists that make up a path between the two you chose. Music Map is another website that shows you several similar artists based on an artist of your choice.

Some additional tips are to ask friends who listen to similar music what other artists they listen to. Also, you could find out who some of the writers or producers of your favorite songs are, because they have probably worked with other artists and have brought a similar sound to their music.

Don’t be afraid to try out new genres that you don’t typically listen to. Try to keep an open mind and don’t judge music based on your assumptions before even listening to it. It might surprise you!
