Leading with Style: A Glimpse into Ashley Rae Mathis’ Wardrobe
When you think of an authority figure at a school, visions of conservative and practical attire may come to mind. However, we are lucky to have a head of school who challenges these stereotypes. She embodies a timeless fashion that represents her professional and personal identity. Ashley Rae Mathis’ closet is a delightful mix of retro chic and timeless elegance, serving as a bridge between historical appreciation and modern-day leadership.
One of Mathis’ core beliefs about fashion is the importance of repurposing. Her main source of clothes stems from thrifting at small, independent businesses, especially women-owned. Her diverse wardrobe widens as she also alters different pieces. Mathis first found this talent growing up, when most clothes would not fit her tall figure. “I had to be like, these jeans are not long enough, so let me cut them a bit more … I’ve gotta make this work.”
A facet of her aesthetic is also derived from her relatives. Mathis stated that her favorite piece of clothing is a funky dress that reminded her of when her grandmother was coming of age. Her favorite accessory is a watch passed down to her by her godmother. This sentimentality can be reflected in all of us as we treasure the small trinkets and wisdom given to us by older relatives.
When asked how she would describe her aesthetic, Mathis phrased her style as vintage and retro chic. This is reflected in the eclectic pieces she pairs together, her statement jewelry, and the patterns and colors in her outfits that would never cross the minds of others. She enjoys pieces with a vibe of decades past. However, she still manages to make these looks appear modern and stylish. Her deep understanding of how she wants to be presented takes place in the way she is already heading the school, even in her second year. We can see all of the positive contributions she adds to our campus, with just one of them being her fashion sense.
Although Mathis is reluctant to accept the compliments from students and staff, everyone at Notre Dame knows that as she walks around campus, she is the center of attention among everyday uniforms. “What I have learned about fashion is that I’ve never been a trendy person. I just like what I like and decide to own it.” Her fearless embrace of individuality not only sets her apart, but also encourages others to celebrate their authentic selves; reminding everyone that true style is about owning who you are.
