Starting high school is a significant leap, so to gain insight into how the class of 2029 is adjusting, we surveyed Notre Dame freshmen about their initial impressions of high school. Their answers paint a picture of optimism, growth, and community.
When asked to describe their overall experience thus far, most students have reported a positive outlook. Half of the respondents called it “amazing,” and one third said it's been “pretty good.” A few students even admitted that it felt “a bit overwhelming,” but nobody has described their start as rough. Being overwhelmed is normal for the transition to high school, but our freshmen seem to suggest that overall, the transition is going well.
Students were also asked what surprised them the most about high school. While Sofia Huerta ‘29 expected something more like “High School Musical,” they were pleasantly surprised that “everyone’s way nicer than that!” Others were shocked by the amount of independence, with Nandini Garg ‘29 noting, “There’s so much more freedom to do things.”
Academically, students are finding the workload manageable. While some said classes were “a little harder,” others described them as “about the same” or even “easier” than the middle school curriculum. Electives have emerged as the favorite subjects of the Class of 2029, followed by English and language classes.
When it comes to what they’re looking forward to, school spirit and community events are at the top of their lists. From enthusiasm, like Ava McFadden '29, saying, “Spirit Week!!” to the thoughtfulness of Sadie Romero ‘29 saying, “New friends and opportunities,” it’s clear that the Leopards are ready to pounce onto ND traditions.
Several students also offered heartfelt advice for next year’s freshmen. Antonia Nelson ‘29 summed it up perfectly, saying, “It may seem like middle school, but I promise you it’s better. Don’t worry about being worried all the time; you have people by your side who will help you. Everyone is a family here at ND!” Despite being new to ND, these freshmen understand this community and how tight-knit it is.
Whether they’re bonding with new classmates during Freshman Night Out, discovering favorite subjects during the school day, or learning to manage their time, these freshmen are stepping into high school with confidence and finding a new home here at ND!
