Photo Gallery: Student Art at ND

It is absolutely indisputable that the creative world is ruled by 2D art. Practically, that makes sense – 2D art is the easiest to market, most accessible, well-known and often the most familiar for beginners looking to get into a hobby. After all, it is a lot easier to go to Michael’s and pick up a set of watercolors than to buy fifty pounds of clay, a kiln, and a potter’s wheel. But diversity of expression is what makes art important; and some of the most interesting forms of visual art are the most often-overlooked. Ceramics, textiles, mixed media, costuming, food design, crafting– they’re all invaluable and deserve the same appreciation as a traditional painting.

This gallery specifically showcases ceramic pieces, mostly mugs and vases featuring bright glazes or intricate work. Notre Dame potters are up to incredible creative endeavors; sit down, grab a drink, and scroll through to enjoy their work!

Title: Conversation Cups

Description: “I created these cups to have a conversation with my Dad because we don’t talk a lot besides school. I would like to get to know his past and tell him more about me and my interests. The Christmas tree on his cup is done by inlay and the flowers on my cup is done by sgraffito which complement each other by being opposites. My dad and I are kind of opposites by me being a young, lively, blooming flower and him being an old, sturdy, grown tree.”

Title: Makai

Description: “Makai”, meaning “toward the ocean” in Hawaiian, reflects both a physical direction and a deeper emotional pull in my life, capturing the beauty of the beaches I visit in Hawaiʻi, a place that holds deep in my heart because it is where my family and grandparents live. The beach is where I have made so many memories as I have grown up: early morning or late-night walks while watching the sunrise or sunset, celebrating milestones together, and spending time with my cousins at the beach house. This piece reflects the quiet, constant force that draws me back to my roots, reminding me of where I come from and who I am becoming.
