Fashion in Figure Skating

The image of graceful skaters gliding on ice in shimmering costumes appears when most think of figure skating. A competitive yet elegant sport, figure skating requires skaters who perform well, perfect their technique, and of course, wear dazzling costumes. Nevertheless, a question that may come to mind is how are figure skating outfits chosen?

While skaters have the freedom to choose their costume design, certain restrictions can be limiting. The International Skating Union, or the ISU, has certain standards and regulations for skating costumes. For instance, skaters must wear costumes that cover their midriffs and hips. What they wear must be “modest, dignified and appropriate for athletic competition” (ISU Special Regulations & Technical Rules Handbook). Parts of a costume, such as crystals or sequins, must stay on the costume at all times. In the case that they fall off during a performance, points can be deducted.

While there are differences between men's and women’s costumes in figure skating, restrictions have been more emphasized for women. Prior to 2006, the ISU did not permit women to wear trousers or unitards in competitions. They later changed this regulation to allow them to wear them, but with the expectation that they adhere to the rules of keeping costumes “modest” and “dignified”. Men, on the other hand, must wear “full-length trousers and must not wear tights,” according to the ISU.

There are several components of figure skating costumes that are not only essential for visual aesthetics but for performance, as well. Skirts are usually preferred to be quite short to prevent the excess fabric from interfering with a skater’s performance. Comfort and flexibility are also considered factors in terms of the costumes’ elastic material. Costumes are often quite shiny because skaters intend to be eye-catching on ice. The use of bold colors and unique designs serve the purpose of not only reflecting the skater’s performance but also visibly standing out to the audience and judges of a competition.

All rules and restrictions aside, it is very important for skaters to choose costumes that reflect their routine and chosen music, enhancing their overall performance. Costumes are truly meant to add a wow factor to a skater’s routine and to ultimately make their performances unforgettable.
