Women’s American Football

There are many women’s football leagues like the Women's Professional Football League (WPFL) and Women's Football Alliance (WFA). However, none are as controversial as the LFL, formerly known as the Legends Football League but now known as the X league. It is an all women’s tackle football league that has had a rocky history and sprouted much controversy, considering their mistreatment of players.

The LFL is considered so controversial because of the improper clothing players are forced to wear. Tackle football is considered one of the most dangerous sports with the most common injury being concussions. Even though this is common knowledge, the members of the X league wear lingerie that barely covers their skin, leaving a lot of room for major injuries. Wearing such revealing clothing while playing such an aggressive game leads to many wardrobe malfunctions.  “After years of playing in lingerie, it's clear these women are comfortable in their own skin -- wardrobe malfunctions on the field and all. "I definitely had my top ripped open," Heather Furr, captain and quarterback of the Bliss team, stated. Though some may be fine with this others definitely are not. Rice, the tackler for the Bliss team said,"I got my under-bottoms ripped off last season." Fagiano, Rice’s teammate, said that the crowd loved it but Rice snapped back, saying, "I didn't love that." Other than criticism about uniforms the LSL has faced, controversies regarding the women being forced to keep up appearances such as tans, figures, and makeup have come about. “There were over 200 girls at my tryout. We ran the 40-yard dash, did footwork, speed and agility drills, and we were required to wear athletic gear that showed off our figures, which, yes, was taken into account. We had to be marketable.” This is what former member of LSL, Tessa Barrera, stated in an interview with VICE.

The LSL has been riddled with controversy since its beginning. One of its most controversial aspects is the clothing athletes need to wear to play. Through this article I implore you to make your own judgments.
