As the school year winds down and summer break draws near, the excitement is palpable in the halls of Notre Dame. Although summer hasn’t started yet, it often tends to feel like the three-month hiatus isn’t enough. To avoid feeling like you missed out on summer’s potential, refer to this guide to maximizing your break!

Go Outside
Take time this summer to go outside and smell the roses. Spending time in nature, whether by hiking in the redwoods or a visit to the beach, is a perfect avenue to new experiences and fun adventures. Time spent in the sun is also beneficial for your mental health; sunshine can boost your mood and reduce stress hormones. Plus, you might even catch a nice tan! If possible, try to spend some time each day outdoors, even if it’s just a walk through your neighborhood park.

Socialize
Be sure to make time this summer with the people you love. Without classes or studying dominating your schedule, it becomes much easier to align plans with friends and family. Take advantage of the extra free time and soak up every moment—it’ll go by faster than you think. This is especially important for seniors heading off to college, as it may be your last summer at home before starting a new chapter. Consider hosting a backyard barbecue, planning a group trip to the beach, going camping or taking a road trip. Whether you're exploring the outdoors or lounging by the pool, time spent with loved ones will always be worthwhile. Filling your days with love and laughter is one of the best ways to make this summer count.

Try New Things
Finally, make an effort to try new things. A summer packed with fresh experiences will never feel like a waste. Try a new food, explore a new city or hike a trail you’ve never been on. Whatever you do, resist the urge to spend all your time indoors. Open yourself up to everything this summer has to offer.

If you often feel like your summer didn’t live up to its potential, remember this: a mix of sunshine, socialization and spontaneity is the foolproof key to making the most of your break.
