GUTS: Everything You Need to Know About Olivia Rodrigo’s New Album

Whether you have or don't have your driver's license, Olivia Rodrigros has something for you. Since the 2021 release of the album SOUR, Rodrigo has been working on her “sophomore” album GUTS, released September 8 2023, featuring 12 tracks. The artist is expected to reach new milestones with her popular album.

Rodrigros new album taps into and experiments with new genres.  On the website rollingstone she says, ‘'I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20 — it was such an intense period of awkwardness and change”. She previously wrote in a statement “I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully the album reflects that.”  It is rumored that GUTS will be more of a rock album than its predecessor "SOUR." However, regardless of the genre, fans are excited to hear the new songs. Prior to the release, Notre Dame student Audrey Spartz ‘27, said “I can’t wait to hear all the new songs that Olivia Rodrigro has been working on, and I am so excited for September 8.”

Before releasing the entire album, Rodrigro teased two tracks: Vampire and bad idea right? On June 30, 2023, She released Vampire, which fans have formulated predictions, targeted towards her large age gap relationships. One lyric from her song is, “Went for me, and not her cause girls your age know better.” Fans immediately made the connection between two of her past relationships with Zack Bia and Adam Faze who both were in their late 20s while Rodrigro was 19. Although Rodrigro has not confirmed anything in regards to who she wrote “Vampire” about, there are certainly many theories circulating . The second song released is called “bad idea right?”. This song is about Rodrigro getting back together with one of her ex’s. Just like Vampire, it is unclear whom exactly she sings about. However, the overall message of this song surrounds how one of her ex’s wants to get back with her and, she has to remind herself why it is not a good idea, or another way to say it, a bad idea right?

On the first of August, Rodrigo posted the full album setlist.  Some songs include, Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl, Love is Embarrassing, Teenage Dream and The Grudge. Featuring a total of 12 songs, there is likely to be a wide variety of genres, themes and styles scattered throughout the album. On her X, formerly known as Twitter, Rodrigo posted, “I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait to share it with you all!” Just like Rodrigro, her fans are really excited for the new project. This artist has already achieved immense success due to her amazing talent. GUTS likely will not be her last album as there will be many other opportunities to come for this talented young artist.

My name is Molly Kaplan, I am a sophomore, and I'm so excited for my first year in Journalism; writing and reading are some of my favorite hobbies! I also play volleyball for a club team and for ND's team, my favorite song right now is Long Live by Taylor Swift and in my free time, I like to go on walks with my dogs (Cooper and Maya). I'm looking forward to getting to write about our community globally and our school's community in a way that allows me to spread awareness about both big and little topics alike.
