Celebrities and Beauty Lines: A Seemingly Common Pair

Nowadays, it seems that the face of every big name in acting, music, and modeling is in every beauty store. Over the past few decades, it seems like every celebrity, with or without knowledge of beauty and health, has decided to start a business in this industry. One might ask why this is, and it all comes down to the following three things: marketing, money, and time.

Having a popular name backing a product is one of the best, if not the best way to gain traction. This is likely a primary reason for why many celebrities would want to start their own beauty lines. Not only do they automatically gain free marketing by having their name attached to the products, but they also get to have majority control over their business.

Good marketing gains attention and brings in money, another important factor in the opening of celebrity businesses. Money is a factor in two ways, with the first being that makeup is an industry that is relatively easy to get into and deal with. It is popular and not overly expensive, yet has the ability to generate an insane amount of revenue. The second way money plays a role is through the production and creation of items. Not only are celebrities known names, but they are also very wealthy individuals. Additionally, by the time they’ve reached the level of wealth necessary to break into a new industry, they also tend to have a lot of time on their hands, more than the average working person. With a lot of time and money, these people are able to formally hire professionals to conduct research, make business plans and decisions, formulate decent quality products, and draw up a creative brand route. All together, they are able to produce a solid line of products, and their famous name is just the cherry on top.

Evidently, it is simple enough to have success in the beauty industry as a celebrity. Yet, those in the public eye did not begin to realize it until 1994 when international supermodel, Iman Abdulmajid, launched her makeup line, Iman Cosmetics. The model aimed for her line to be curated specifically for women of color, who previous to the time did not have many makeup options in the formerly non-inclusive industry. The brand was an instant success with the general consumer market. Furthermore, it propelled future people with similar platforms to do the same and test their luck within the beauty space.

Since the launch of Iman Cosmetics, there have been many more celebrities who have attempted to start beauty lines in hopes of having as much success. Some notable names in the industry include reality star Kylie Jenner, who is a mass success in the industry with Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin, and pop singer Rihanna, who created popular brands Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin. Other celebrities who have had success are musician Selena Gomez, model Hailey Bieber, and artist Ariana Grande.

Though motives may be different, the extremely successful beauty industry has been a very popular endeavor for many celebrities who have an exorbitant amount of time, money, and fame. Many have tried and failed to break into the market, but a good number have been able to successfully secure another source of income and perform well within the industry. Beauty has and will continue to be a very big part of the economy, so it is safe to say that there will be more to come regarding big names in the industry.
