The Hunger Games New Prequel: Review and History of Shaping Dystopian Movies

When Suzanne Collins first published her book The Hunger Games in 2008, never would she have thought her stories would become a giant dystopian franchise that brought in $2.97 billion dollars. The Hunger Games books would later become 4 major motion picture movies that would create a fandom that would last for years and heavily promote the prequel 8 years later. The new movie staring Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Viola Davis, and more, have people excited for the fantastic cast and to see what they are going to bring to the table.

Back when the first movie was released in 2012, it was based hundreds of year in the future. Entertainment for the people relied on a deathly game based on the sacrificing of 2 people from each of the 12 districts to survive in an arena. In these Hunger Games, the last person alive wins. The original story follows the main characters Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark from district 12 being sent into the Hunger Games and outsmarting who is in charge of the games so they could both stay alive. The rest of the stories of Katniss and Peeta follow how they try and take down the unjust and separated society they live in.

The Hunger Games movie was released in a time that could be considered the peak time for dystopian movies. We got this series along with Divergent, The Maze Runner, the Giver, the 5th Wave, and more that have been favorites for people whose favorite genre is dystopian. However, the Hunger Games was said to be scarier because of its real-life features in the movie. They faced challenges with the rich and poor, poverty, and a tough government.

When asked how excited she is for the new movie and why, Isabella Herrera from the class of 2025 had replied, “On a scale from 1-10, I'm a 10. I’m looking forward to the return of what can be considered the best YA book-to-movie adaptation. The impact the original movie The Hunger Games had on our society and pop culture is crazy because of the revival of the series last year, and over the 10 years there have been new fans into this fandom. It shows the impact.” And when asked the same question, sophomore Elina Pascual said, “I really liked the book when it came out and the movie looks promising, that hopefully it will live up to the book.”

Fans all over the world have been getting ready for this film coming to theaters on November 17th, 2023. So go get your tickets, sit back and relax, buy some popcorn, and may the odds be ever in your favor. Now, you can enjoy the new Hollywood blockbuster movie that is on the big screens.
