Falling Into Autumn

As the summer sun sets and the autumn equinox approaches, students prepare to return to school refreshed and ready for a new beginning. Although it doesn’t cool down until late October, the sentiment is still strong: students are ready for the fall.

The school year will soon commence, full of new schedules, teachers, and classes. With these come new goals and plans to start the year. Maggie Garza ‘24 is aiming to “hit the ground running with college apps,” and plans to focus on her essays as she returns to classes. College applications are a huge part of fall for many seniors, as early decision and early action applications can be due as early as November. Other students have different plans: Inari Gerhart ‘26’s main goal is to begin the year in a well-organized and prepared space. Gerhart plans to utilize the many features of Notion, a digital workspace, to keep on top of classwork and homework throughout the year, and also plans on getting new stationery to start the year on a fresh page. Across grades, the general focus of students is starting off the year on a positive note with a good work ethic.

Of course, school is not the only thing that students look forward to as fall begins. Cooler weather, plaid blankets, sweaters, and “Gilmore Girls” are just a few aspects that make up a quintessential fall for students. Sana Saranjame ‘26 remarks that she “wait[s] until Sept. 1 to start rewatching Gilmore Girls,” because of the fall energy and comforting tone it sets for the start of the year. The consensus from students is a general excitement for the “fall vibe” and the turning of the season. And not without good reason. For many, the “fall vibe” conjures up comforting memories of spending time curled up with a familiar book or movie, apple cider, spending time with friends and family, and going to the pumpkin patch and carving pumpkins. The energy of these few months is truly contagious and provides the perfect canvas for the start of a new school year, which for many represents a new beginning in their lives.

Although for some this time of year can be stressful or difficult, the comfort and serenity of the season makes it easy to relax and take time for oneself.
