My Summer of 2020 Internship

This summer, I was hoping to travel the world! I wanted to learn about different cultures and what it’s like living across the world. I wasn’t expecting Covid-19 to come, a supposedly summer of fun became a summer of staying at home. I was disappointed, I was hoping to learn something new and I thought I wouldn’t be able to do any of that, but then I found out about The Kumar for Congress Internship.

When I came across this internship, I knew I had to apply because this would be a great opportunity for me to learn about what happens behind the scenes of a political election. During my first two weeks as an intern, I learned so much about what goes into running a campaign. I made over 3,000 phone calls, the majority of which were to ask our senior citizens regardless of political stance, if they need any help getting their groceries & medication delivered to them personally. This was such a positive experience because it felt great to know that I was helping people during a difficult time.

I also had the opportunity to host a Meet & Greet/Policy discussion with Rishi. I always wanted to organize a town hall meeting so when this opportunity arose, I immediately started working on it. My family and I only had four days to plan it which taught me how to organize a successful event in a very short time frame.

Apart from phone banking and organizing the Meet & Greet, I helped strategize for fundraising events, re-write some policies and priorities, and worked on getting endorsements. This internship has definitely been a lot of work but I’ve learned so much about myself and where I stand, politically, as well as learned about what happens behind the scenes of an election. This is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m very lucky to have learned something new!
