Emma: Movie Review

Emma is one of 1800s novelist Jane Austen’s well-known novels, which has brought a new 2020 adaptation to movie theaters. Common Sense Media describes the film as being a “Delightful Austen adaptation has a couple of cheeky scenes.” The protagonist, Emma Woodhouse, likes to play matchmaker, constantly interfering with her companions’ love lives.

Emma is very different from many of Austen’s other protagonists. She has grown up rich and has a very privileged life. As such, “she had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her”, which is what eventually leads her into trouble. While Emma does have good intentions, her vanity keeps her from realizing the mistakes that she makes, causing more harm than good. However, she is able to learn from her mistakes and is able to redeem herself by showing generosity and kindness in the end.  The themes of forgiveness and empathy are heavily highlighted throughout the film. Although people make mistakes, they are only human, and can make up for it if they wish to.

Emma has received generally favorable reviews, and has grossed $25 million worldwide. Many people have found the film as a charming romantic comedy with beautiful set designs and enjoyable characters, but due to some PG-13 content and the differences between the original novel, this film is not for everyone. However, someone who relates to the “matchmaker” vibe, and enjoys romantic comedies with some flare to it will likely enjoy this movie.
