Movie Stereotypes/Cliches

Throughout movies and TV shows in history, certain tropes of different groups of people have been played out far too many times. Whether its the dumb jock, the nerd being shoved into a locker, or the popular group of blonde girls that ruthlessly trash talk the main character, in almost all high school themed movies, you'll find these types of people. And along with the stereotypical characters these movies contain, they also come along with a tired plot with a predictable ending. Either the nerd girl falls in love with the popular boy and creates a "forbidden love" situation, or gets bullied by the popular people. Movies like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, She's All That are pigeonholes for blatant tropes. Even modern TV that tries to list themselves as "inclusive," like Riverdale or Gossip Girl can't hide the fact that the stereotypes remain standard and basic even today.  These cliches are harmful because they often display many misjudgments about certain communities or groups. The lack of individuality and uniqueness that these shows possess portrays what the entertainment industry actually needs to attract different kinds of people. When the casting is done for shows and movies, there is often a specific criteria per character that the casting agents must meet. This can happen by adding more diversity to the scripts and stories themselves; it would make it easier for the casting agents to select more untouched talent and create a more accepting representation of different races, sexualities, and beliefs.
