2020 Film Award Season - Pre Oscars

This year’s award season has brought a lot of attention to the diversity of the nominees and the winners. Unlike previous years, there are no female director nominations for the Oscars, and nearly all-white actors were nominated across the award ceremonies. The majority of the films which are receiving nominations and wins feature white male leads, and about 2 in 5 feature women. As we head towards the Oscars, let’s review... Front Running Films It’s natural that Hollywood likes Hollywood Films, and that the British like British films. 1917 swept at the BAFTAs, while Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has done well in the Hollywood Award ceremonies. So far, Parasite has done well, and will likely secure the win for “Best Foreign Film”. While many of the other nominees are pretty predictable, we can also make predictions based on the other ceremonies as well. 1917 - Won 2/3 Golden Globes (Best Drama and Director), 3/8 Critics Choice (Tied for Best Director), 7/9 BAFTAs, including Best Film and Best Director. Nominated for 10 Oscars. The Irishman - Won: 1/14 Critics Choice (Best Ensemble Cast). Nominated for 5 Golden Globes, 10 BAFTAs, 10 Oscars Joker - Won: 2/4 Golden Globes, 2/7 Critics Choice, The SAG for Best Actor, 3/11 BAFTAs. Nominated for 11 Oscars. In all ceremonies so far, Joker has won Best Actor and Best Score. Little Women - Won 1/9 Critics Choice (Adapted Screenplay), 1/5 BAFTAs. Nominated for 2 Golden Globes and 6 Oscars Marriage Story - Won: 1/6 Golden Globes, 1/8 Critics Choice, The SAG for Best Supporting Actress, 1/5 BAFTAs, All of which were for Laura Dern’s performance. Nominated for 6 Oscars Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Won: 3/5 Golden Globes (Comedy, Screenplay, Supporting Actor), 4/12 Critics Choice Awards (including Best Picture), The SAG for Best Supporting Actor, 1/10 BAFTAs (Brad Pitt). Nominated for 10 Oscars Parasite - Won: 1/3 Golden Globes, 2/7 Critics Choice (Tied for Best Director), The SAG for Performance by a Cast, 2/4 BAFTAs. Nominated for 6 Oscars and frontrunner for Foreign Film. All of these films, along with Ford v Ferrari and Jojo Rabbit were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. The Actors So far, the five major award ceremonies have all had the same opinion about the actors, and it’s looking like the actors will be scoring an award season sweep, similar to 2018. Renee Zelleweger - For her portrayal of Judy Garland, she has won all of the major acting awards so far. She was nominated alongside: Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Saorise Ronan, and Charlize Theron. Joaquin Phoenix - The Joker of this decade. He has won the other 4 major acting awards, and is on the path for securing the grand prize. He was nominated alongside: Antonio Banderas, Leonardo Dicaprio, Adam Driver, and Jonathan Price. Laura Dern - Cast alongside Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, Dern has won all of the major acting awards, being nominated in her category with: Kathy Bates, Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, and Margot Robbie. Brad Pitt - One of Hollywood’s biggest names. He was nominated alongside: Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. The Golden Globes and the Screen Actors’ Guilld Awards seemed to do better with nominating different cultures, while the Oscars were called out for only nominating one black actor, and the BAFTAs did not nominate any non-white actors, except for the EE Rising Star Award. Many celebrities have spoken up about this, and are hoping to sway the public and Hollywood itself to make changes in the industry to further diversify. The 2020 Oscars will be held on February 9, 2020, 5:00 PM PST
