Ford v Ferrari Review

The film Ford v Ferrari, based on a true story, is centered around the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1966. This race is what you think it is: a 24-hour long race, meaning breaks for the drivers, but not the cars. In other words, a certain car is driven for 24 hours straight, constantly switching drivers. his film tells the story of how Ford Motors plans to defeat Ferrari in this competition. Spoilers ahead, so be warned if you have not watched it yet!Ford v Ferrari begins with a flashback of Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) in a previous Le Mans race. In the present, it is revealed that Shellby is no longer allowed to race, and therefore makes and sells his own cars. He is then approached and decides to try and beat Ferrari within 90 days. One conversation that takes place is, “Well, it takes somethin' money can't buy”.     “Well, it can buy speed”.     “It isn't about speed”.Here, Carroll Shelby refers to how a big factor of winning the race is the driver itself. Therefore, he suggests his friend Ken Miles (played by Christian Bale) to man the vehicle. However, the Ford Motors Company is hesitant and almost rejects Shellby’s suggestion due to Miles’ renown ill manner and temper. The film does start out more slowly in the beginning, focusing mainly on the creation of this Ford car set to beat a Ferrari. Although, this leads to the most action near the end of the movie, when Miles competes in the 24 hours at Le Mans race. He only comes in second due to both a technicality and a certain demand from the Ford Motor company. In the end, Miles practices driving more with a new car, but has braking failure and crashes. The end of the movie shows how everyone copes with his death. The lead actors are excellent, exhibiting both Shellby and Miles’ personalities with their own twists based on Damon and Bale’s real-life friendship. Although the beginning of the film seems slow and elongates the movie (2.5 hours), the race towards the end picks things up and makes it seem as if the viewer is in the movie itself. It immerses the viewer with its different perspectives and the sound effects. The humor incorporated is sure to make viewers laugh hysterically, but also emphasizes the more difficult parts of the story, evoking many different emotions. This may be a story of the past, but Ford v Ferrari shows its worldly and lasting impact today.
