It Chapter 2 Review

It Chapter 2 is the anticipated sequel to It, the adaptation of the book by Stephen King. The first movie tells the story of The Losers’ Club, a group of children terrorized by a clown named Pennywise. Although, in It Chapter 2, these children have aged 27 years and are now in their 40s, coming back to fight Pennywise in their old hometown. Because it is a sequel, many fans of the first movie have become attached to these characters. Therefore, the experience is much more emotional for those who have watched the first movie. On the other hand, those who are not previous fans may see the movie from a completely different perspective.

It (2017) and It Chapter Two cast, (from left to right, top to bottom) Jaeden Martell, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Finn Wolfhard, and Jeremy Ray Taylor

The casting in the second movie is spectacular due to the similarities between the child actors and their adult counterparts. The plot from the first movie excels into the next. Although, it becomes more complicated (as most things do with adult life) with different flashbacks, which may have been possibly disorienting for those who have not had previous knowledge on neither the first movie nor the book. The book itself contains these flashbacks that critics tend to judge harshly. These flashbacks serve a main purpose: to connect the adult Losers’ Club to their origins in Derry, Maine. Therefore, some may even consider It Chapter 2 more of a coming-of-age movie than a horror one. The Losers may have grown older, but they never lose their connections to one another.

It Chapter 2 cast, (from left to right, top to bottom) James McAvoy, Isaiah Mustafa, Jessica Chastain, James Ransone, Andy Bean, Bill Hader, and Jay Ryan
