Generation Z, born into a world with the fast-changing reality of climate change, has been an emerging force in fighting for a sustainable future. Unlike previous generations, they have witnessed an unprecedented number of wildfires, rapidly rising sea levels, and various events that mark the planet’s instability. Seeing these unfortunate experiences first-hand has fueled a sense of urgency within Gen Z, pushing many to work towards reshaping how the world tackles climate change.
For many in Gen Z, climate activism has been a lived necessity. Activists like Greta Thunburg rose to fame in 2018 when she began skipping school to protest for more decisive climate action outside the Swedish parliament. She quickly became a strong collective voice and embodied the passion and determination of Gen Z through her various movements, such as her solitary “School Strike for Climate.” Although Thunburg happens to be one of many global activists and icons across numerous continents, young people are constantly organizing ways to advocate for the preservation of the earth on a local level. From cleaning polluted waterways to beach clean-ups, Gen Z’s activism underscores a significant shift in mindset.
Many members of Gen Z go beyond the use of digital fluency to address climate change. Growing up in a hyper-connected world of social media, they have used platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to raise awareness and arrange action. Engaging videos and creative hashtags about environmental issues help them reach audiences beyond their local communities. Social media has also served as a tool for education, with shared resources on sustainability and true recognition for the voices of underrepresented communities most affected by climate change. Gen Z’s inclusion and equity set them apart, as they weave together climate and social justice.
Beyond working collectively to achieve climate justice, individuals in Gen Z have redefined consumer culture by aligning their purchases with their beliefs and values. Second-hand shopping has become a trend, where sustainability is a guiding principle. Platforms like Depop and Poshmark have been an accessible way for many people to put forth their best efforts to combat the wastefulness of fast fashion. Similarly, the rise of a plant-based diet and alternative proteins among Gen Z has reshaped the food industry, significantly reducing our food-related environmental footprint.
Gen Z’s approach to climate action is visionary and practical, combining the knowledge of systemic issues that devastate climate change with collective responsibility. Their works for activism and solutions all while having the hopes of having a better future reshape how we address the climate crisis but also how we can define leadership within global challenges. The fight against climate change isn’t over, but Gen Z offers a glimpse of what we can achieve.
