Introducing A New Notre Dame Teacher: Doc Bloch

This school year, the Notre Dame community is excited and proud to welcome a new science teacher! Please give a warm welcome to Dr. Bloch, who is a part of the science department. Here are some questions answered by Bloch so that the Notre Dame community can get to know him a little bit better.

To start, the new teacher shared that his love for science started early in his childhood and that he took inspiration from an important figure in his life. Bloch stated, “My inspiration was my dad, who was a scientist. I was three years old, bugging him with all the ‘why?’ questions like three-year-olds do, and I was getting a scientist’s answer. So I kind of looked at the world that way, because it’s how I first learned to look at the world. And so, science always came really easily to me, and I love science, and I am very curious about it.” This early curiosity for Bloch has led him into a classroom full of high school students where he is eager and ready to teach everyone the mysteries and wonders of the world.

Bloch goes on to explain, “One thing that’s exciting about this job for me is because I’ve never done high school chemistry before, like my repertoire of the labs that I know is going to grow.” This shows that Bloch is ready to teach but also further his teaching skills as well.

Bloch even goes on to express his appreciation for his new colleagues as he steps into his new teaching role, “This part is important, for which I am very grateful to Ms.Vu for sharing her labs with me.” He acknowledges that collaboration is important as he transfers into a new environment, highlighting how his supportive nature can help foster growth.

Looking ahead, Notre Dame’s new teacher even hopes to expand on new opportunities for students. One of the questions asked was, “If you could add anything to the high school curriculum what would it be?” Bloch stated, “If I could add something to the high school curriculum it would be a course on modern physics.” He later added, “I would want to do the experiments that you’re curious to do.” This emphasizes his desire to create hands-on and student driven learning experiences.

With his passion and curiosity, the new member of the science department is sure to excite and motivate students this school year!
