A Reflection on Homecoming

As Notre Dame High School returns to a  new normal, yearly events, including Homecoming, have resumed. Homecoming, which occurred recently, had many mixed reviews as ND has been readjusting to our school events. As usual, many ND students brought along guests from other schools. However, the main difference between this year’s homecoming versus those in previous years was its setting. Typically, homecoming is held in the gym, but this year, to uphold COVID-19 safety protocols, it was held outside in Pardini Park. Although it was definitely a large change from the usual homecoming dance traditions, the organizers ensured that the experience would be similar, if not exactly the same, as in previous years. They created a similar ambiance with decorations, music, food, games, and activities for all of the participants.

Some of the students’ favorite parts of the dance were the photo booths and, of course, seeing friends and dancing. Many guests expressed their love for the photo booth, where the workers printed numerous pictures, which was especially helpful for large groups of friends who took photos. At the dance, people were able to have a great time with friends, both from ND and from other schools. They interacted and danced with friends, while also meeting new people!

The music choices elicited more mixed responses from students. Since the music was chosen by students by texting their song recommendations to the DJs, there were many songs that were well-known and that everyone could dance and sing to. However, there were also songs that fewer people knew, which led to  the guests awkwardly standing on the dance floor. According to many students, there were numerous songs that weren’t well-known and didn’t necessarily belong at homecoming.

As for the guests at the dance, many of them also enjoyed the event. However, similarly to the ND students, some of the guests also agreed that the music could have been much better. Many thought that ND homecoming was better than those of other schools, but the music was still an issue.

The other things that should be changed for future dances and mixers are the decorations and activities at the dance. This year’s theme for homecoming was the movie “Tangled,” but the theme was not well portrayed throughout the dance. Also, people wished that there was more food available, such as pizza, drinks other than water, and chocolate fondue, instead of solely desserts.

From all these reviews, it is clear that the participants enjoyed ND’s homecoming and they had lots of fun at the dance! Although there are certain issues that should be taken into consideration for future dances, the overall reviews were positive and guests had a great experience!
