2025 Basilisks’ First Spirit Week and What They Can Expect

Seeing the original, uneventful gym, one may think, “How could you transform this into something amazing?” Along with the help of their class, the Class Councils take this question and prove to you that with hard work, Notre Dame students can come together and design something spectacular! Think colorful streamers, banners, costumes, paint, and much more during this legendary week on Monday, March 14th to Friday the 18th, 2022.

When asking the upperclassmen about their favorite school memory, a majority of the students stated that Spirit Week was their favorite. The only students at Notre Dame that have not experienced this occasion, whether online or in-person, are our Class of 2025 Basilisks. Entering this year, the freshmen have so far experienced Homecoming, school mixers, virtual field trips, and masses but the students have not yet encountered the exciting event, known as Spirit Week.

Spirit Week at Notre Dame is a stirring school gathering that brings the students of each grade together to compete against other grades. For the freshman who have no clue what to expect, these students have been told to “Think big.” With games such as cheering on the staff for teacher bowling, dancing to songs each grade level has written, getting creative on themed dress-up days, and enjoying the cheerleaders’ performances, there is much to expect. “I’m excited for the gym decorating since I have seen photos of the hard work everyone has done and they do amazing work. I'm happy about working with my friends for this activity and having a good time,” explains Maia Dietz ‘25. On the weekend before Spirit Week, the students come to school for Build Day to decorate the gym as their class’s respective theme. Each grade works very hard to try and outshine the other competitors.

Other freshmen are more excited to see who will take the title of the First Place winners. “I heard that Spirit Week is a big deal at ND and I'm excited about the gym decorating and not having to wear a uniform,” says Chloe Salisbury ‘25, “But I am excited for the competition between the grades because the Homecoming game between the freshmen and sophomores was fun.” Salisbury is ready to expect and contribute to all of Notre Dame's school spirit.

Although this Spirit Season may be complicated with getting back into the spirit after not doing this event for two years, the students at Notre Dame are dedicated to making this event as memorable as possible and for the new freshmen at this school to experience the phenomenon, known as Spirit Week.
