2020 Grammys

Each year, musicians, music lovers, and just about anyone highly anticipate the Grammys, an award show presented by The Recording Academy. This year, it surprised many and showed the growth of the music industry. From new artists,\ to appreciating the diverse tastes in music, the Grammys were a huge hit.

One of the most memorable events of this year’s show was the recognition of the talented young artist, Billie Eilish. At just 18 years old, she received 5 Grammys alongside her brother and producer, Finneas O’Connell. She won Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Song, Best Record of the Year, and Best New Artist, becoming the youngest person to win album of the year.

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ acceptance speech to the Salute to Industry Icons Award at the Pre-Grammy Gala impacted many by highlighting the past and ongoing stigma of hip hop in mainstream media and prestigious awards like the Grammys.

Occurring on the same day as the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, Gianna Bryant, Payton Chester, Sarah Chester, Alyssa Altobelli, Keri Altobelli, John Altobelli, Christina Mauser, and Ara Zobayan, the awards show included many heartfelt messages, including a heartfelt speech and performance from host Alicia Keys and Boys II Men, and shoutouts from Lizoz, Naz, DJ Khaled, and more. The reactions from celebrities and individuals around the world, along with the Grammys taking place in the infamous Staples Center where Bryant played, showed his impact and the devastation felt by many around the world. Another touching moment occurred when John Legend, YG, Meek Mill, Kirk Franklin, and Roddy Ricch performed to give a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle and his work throughout his community. Hussle posthumously won the Best Rap Performance award which was accepted by his grandmother.

Each year, the Grammys production and performances seem to become more impressive. But this year was marked with powerful speeches, new forces in the music industry, tragedy, love, and a desire for change, making its mark in the Grammy Awards Show history.
