How to Put Yourself First

In today’s world, it’s easy to get caught up in the distracting digital age around us. It seems like every day there’s new potentially life-shattering news, and it may seem like there’s nothing that you can do. However, that’s not always the case. You can only truly control your own actions, and one of the best courses of action you can take is to provide yourself with the resources you need to function at your best.
Some of the best tried and true methods to clear your mind are listening to music or pouring yourself a cup of tea; however, not all of these methods will work for every person. Other methods to center yourself include some more non-traditional ones, like consuming a new type of media or changing up your schedule. Adding new elements to your routine can cause reflection, which is especially necessary for thoughtfulness and peace of mind. One common internet joke, “touching grass,” in all seriousness does wonders for the mind; even a few minutes outside can change your entire train of thought about certain matters.
Expectations — whether self-implemented or by someone else — quickly pile up over time. It can be difficult to put yourself first in these scenarios, especially with the fast-paced nature of high school and beyond. That being said, it’s best to keep in mind what you can do for yourself in the present moment. Beyond yourself, you can easily find help in those around you; your assigned counselor is always ready to meet with you should you seek their support, and good friends will always be ready to lend an ear when you need it.
These new ways to center yourself might be extremely helpful to you, or maybe they won’t be. There isn’t one singular way to reflect; nor is there one “right” or “wrong” way. It’s important that you find which methods work best for you, especially with the upcoming second semester. Make sure to make yourself a priority during this workload season, and remember that you are worth more than what people may expect from you.
