Summer Book Recs

For bibliophiles, the daunting “summer reading list” can feel overwhelming, especially with the many new releases forthcoming in 2023. During the summer, I personally enjoy lighthearted romance or historical fiction, depending on my mood. This summer, I plan to reread one of my favorite books, “My Brilliant Friend” by Elena Ferrante. Published in 2011, Ferrante’s novel follows two friends growing up in Naples during the 1950s. She explores the truths of womanhood and friendship, while also discussing self-exploration and political turmoil. “My Brilliant Friend” is a fantastic coming-of-age story perfect for anyone in a transitional period. Ferrante’s emotional depth and brilliant character development are what makes this four-part series stand out. The best part is that if you've read the books, you can enjoy the award-winning television series. The ambiance of the novel and the fluidity of the story is what makes this a perfect read for the summer. Coming out more recently in 2018, “Normal People” by Sally Rooney, is also a summer favorite. The novel takes a beautiful look at romantic relationships and emotions. Intense and intimate, Rooney’s novel explores the challenges we face when confronting our own emotions and feelings. This heartfelt romance set in Dublin is a perfect read for the summer.

The popular release “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo”byTaylor Jenkins Reid, has created an uproar in the literary community for its truth telling and enchanting storyline. For anyone who needs a story to get lost in, this book is for you. For someone who favors a thriller, “The Guest List”  and “The Paris Apartment”by Lucy Foley are fantastic suspenseful stories for your summer reading endeavors. Those seeking an escape will enjoy “The House in the Cerulean Sea”  by T.J. Klune, praised  for its fantastical storyline that offers relief from reality. More recently, it is necessary to acknowledge the rise of Emily Henry. Releasing books like “Beach Read” (2020) and “People We Meet on Vacation”(2021) has drastically increased her popularity and provided readers with some great summer reads. Her release of “Book Lovers” in 2022 was extremely successful and she’s continuing to write contemporary romance. “Happy Place”, Henry’s newest novel,is set to be released this spring, and it is perfect for anyone seeking a feel-good fiction read. Henry’s specialties lie in writing female friendships that are real and healthy. Her novels are a welcome break from the male gaze, offering stories that are instead written for women, about women, and by a woman. Good luck on your summer reading endeavors!
