New Year, New You: Simple Habits for for the New Year

January is a reset button for us. It's a new calendar year and a chance to be a more improved version of yourself. But the “new you” doesn’t have to be a dramatic makeover or a perfectly organized lifestyle. It can come from simple habits that you can actually stick to during the busy school year.

First, start with one clear goal and make it attainable. Instead of a broad goal like “get into shape”, try to take small steps like “walk for 15 minutes a day”. Tiny actions build confidence and routine, and confidence builds consistency.

Another simple habit is to set up a weekly check-in with yourself. Take 5 minutes every weekend to look at the week ahead of you. Whether its tests, work shifts, or anything stressful coming up, plan out your week and when you want to get things done. This helps you stay motivated and more efficient with the things in your life as you are planning for them, not having them be thrown at you.

Next, make your habits easier to start. Start planning your day with your goals in mind like filling up your water bottle every morning, putting your running shoes by the door, or opening your homework tab to remind you to complete it before you open TikTok. The less effort it takes to begin a goal means you’ll be more likely to follow through on it.

Try and set a goal that targets your physical and mental well being. Sleep is one underrated glow-up habit that many people overlook. Aim to consistently go to bed at a reasonable time and actually wake up to your alarm without snoozing it five times. Getting better sleep improves your mood, focus, and energy, helping you stay on track throughout the day.

Plan for a few setbacks in your goals. If you miss one study session or one run, it won't ruin your progress. Just remember to make up for a setback the next day. Never let yourself get too behind.

Finally, track your progress and wins. Write down something you accomplish each day and even treat yourself if you meet your goal by the end of your journey! Progress is a lot easier to see when you track it and record the milestones.

This new year, don't chase a brand new version of yourself. Instead build simple habits and let the “new you” show up naturally, day by day.
