The first thing one has to understand in the irony in fashion trends is to know what IS irony. Irony is a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects, and is often amusing as a result. What is so amusing about the irony in fashion trends is that it is essentially wearing something that is “unfashionable” or “unwearable” while seeming to attempt to be fashionable.
Mom jeans were first popularised in the 70’s but heavily peaked in the 80’s and throughout the 90’s. The style of it is high waisted and tight around the waist but loose throughout the leg which are considered unfashionable and unflattering to the wearer’s figure. Only recently has this style come back and now everyone wears mom jeans. We should thank our mothers for kickstarting such a fashionable trend!
Slides/ Shower Sandals
Initially people wore slides when they went to the showers during college or at a public shower. Typically athletes would wear these shoes, but now it has been a fashion trend explosion as high end brands such as Gucci and Givenchy have given into the trend.
Baseball/ Dad Caps
Before, it would’ve been looked down upon if you wore your dad’s cap, but now it has been an essential and integral piece of our outfits.
When I was in middle school, I remember how much I would beg my mom to buy me ripped jeans, but she would always keep refusing, wondering why would I spend money on clothing that’s destroyed. Fast forward to now, ripped jeans are in everyone’s closet and a go-to clothing piece for a day to hang out with friends or to go on a date.
